Image dimensions are measured in pixels, while file size is measured in bytes. Changing width and height is useful when a form asks for values such as 300×300 or when a camera photo is much larger than a website needs. Ratio lock is enabled by default so people, documents and logos keep their natural shape.
Fit places the complete image inside the requested box and may produce one side smaller than the entered value. Fill + Crop fills the entire box by trimming the edges. Exact forces both dimensions and can stretch a face or object, which is why it carries a warning and is never the default. Use common dimensions as a starting point, then inspect the preview.
Downscaling is performed in careful steps to preserve edges better than one extreme resize. JPG works well for camera photographs; PNG suits screenshots and transparent graphics; WebP is efficient for modern websites. Re-encoding removes hidden EXIF metadata and never changes the original file on your device.

Why did one dimension become smaller?
Fit mode preserves the aspect ratio and keeps the whole image visible. If the requested box has a different shape, one side must be smaller.
What is Fill + Crop?
It preserves the image shape while trimming the top and bottom or left and right until the requested box is completely filled.
When should I use Exact?
Only when distortion is acceptable or the source already has the same ratio. Never use it for passport faces unless the ratios already match.
Does resizing reduce file size?
Usually yes because fewer pixels need storage, but format and image detail also matter. Use the compressor when a portal specifies a byte limit.
